I wish that we had a video camera on each one of the road trips we’ve been on. Actually--- I take that back. Some things that happen on road trips,..stay on road trips. But I’ll share just a few of the stories and crazy things that have happened on some of our cross-country excursions.
So, let me start by saying that with every road trip comes a few things. Good jamz are a massively important part of the drive. Sometimes we have a good throwback jam sesh starring Hannah Montana, the Jonas Brothers, and all the Paramore albums. But we always have T-Swift in the road trip playlist. And one time Taylor and I for about three hours made up our own songs. No, really. We free-style rapped for an hour and then we made up our own musical singing about over-sized loads on trucks.
Good conversation always comes with a long drive too. We’ve told so many life stories, come up with great ideas, and had a great time just talking and turning off the music for a bit. One time Mikaela and I were on a road trip together and it was the first time she admitted to herself (and me) that she liked Nolan. And then we got to pray over the whole situation because it freaked her out to think about a relationship. (And look where they are now!) Conversation with friends is good, but also road trips by myself are my favorite because conversation with Jesus is the very best. My eight-hour drives from Liberty to Hendersonville are ones I always look forward to. Most of the time I don’t even turn on the radio or anything, it’s just solid time talking to Jesus and there is nothing better!
One of the best road trips of the year is Quest. Taking some 17 crazy Liberty students to Nashville for Long Hollow’s youth event Quest. We get to serve students and with each other, and taking a road trip with 17 of your best friends is the most stellar thing ever. Imagine 4 carloads of people caravanning together, and all at once swarming into Arby’s at stop number one of the drive to Nashville. And most of the time we spend about an hour at the gas station because with 17 people, we get easily side tracked.
And with road trips also come lots of different things, one of those things being smells, from a lack of showering. Maybe you don’t want to know this, but I’ll tell you anyway. Last month, we took our crew of 17 to Quest and when the weekend was done all four cars pulled out of my driveway. Me, Taylor, Camille, and Kate were in the last car in the caravan. Somehow when we were already 15 minutes into our eight-hour drive back to Liberty, we decided to turn right back around and drive six hours in the exact opposite direction to go to Arkansas. We skipped classes, work, and Taylor even skipped a quiz. (oops.)
It was the best decision of our lives I kid you not. We drove the six hours there and made it just in time for the free Hillsong Young & Free concert that was in Arkansas that night. We hadn’t showered all of Quest weekend, and then that night we sweated even more from jumping and dancing around praising Jesus. After that night we decided to skip three whole days of school, and make our 16 hour drive back to Liberty the slowest it could possibly be with as many stops as possible. We would wake up in the morning, get in the car and drive a little bit and then stop to see a friend on the way. And then somehow we would end up saying to each other, “Hey… wanna just stay another night?” And then we would do just that.
We didn’t shower at all, or change clothes really because we only brought enough for like two days…because we had only planned on spending the weekend in Nashville. Needless to say, nobody would have ever wanted to be our friend because we looked awful and smelled even worse than we looked.
Two days after we finally got back to Liberty from spending a week away due to the spontaneous 16 hour trip to Arkansas, we went on Spring Break. And after going to Florida and back, we figured out that Camille, Kate, Taylor, and I had spent over 76 hours in the car together in the span of two weeks.
That’s just one of the most recent road trips we’ve taken. There are so many more, and honestly it’s one of our favorite things. We don’t like to stay in one place for too long, and when we need a break from school, a road trip is the answer. Whether that’s a short trip to North Carolina to see Ben Rector, or a 14 hour trip to Florida, any road trip is a good road trip.
Last Spring Break we took Roop’s mini van to Florida, and let me tell ya… that was an eventful one. Every year for the superbowl, all of us make a quick trip to Grayson’s house in Greensboro and his parents cook us the best food in all the land. We’ve taken a short 2 hour trip to see Taylor Swift, and many trips to Taylor’s house in D.C. Some road trips, my car broke down. And on Spring Break, one of the windshield wipers on Roop’s mini van flew off in the middle of the highway and we had to stop and buy a new one because it was monsooning outside.
But no joke, each one has such special memories that we will always remember. Road trips have brought us so much closer as friends. If you’re in college, about to be in college, or out of college…whatever your state of life may be, always make time for road trips. There’s nothing more fun that jamming out with your friends, and enjoying a drive. Make pit stops on the drive, and stop at random places that look cool. Maybe a field or an old country store. All I know is that the most fun I’ve had in college has been on road trips with my friends where we just do the most random things. Sometimes that has been praying all together in the middle of a Wendy’s. Or stopping at a beautiful Vineyard and climbing on hay bales. Whatever it looks like and wherever it may be, any road trip can be so rad.
Just go places. It’ll be worth it.
See you guys tomorrow!
